HAVERHILL

LOCATION

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The city was established in 1640 under the name Pentucket. Later, the name was changed to Haverhill and it was incorporated in 1870. Originally begun as a farming community, Haverhill eventually became home to numerous mills and manufacturing facilities. Shoemaking was the leading industry for more than 180 years. Today, computer technology and research companies are among those housed in Haverhill's seven industrial parks and business districts.
